Ocean Rowing Training

25.04.23

Who would have thought that there was a dedicated training program for preparing to row across the ocean?

Following David Bell’s advice, Louis attended the essential navigation course certified by the Royal Yacht Association (RYA) in Burnham-On-Crouch, a small town located east of London.

During his time there, Louis had the opportunity to meet the incredible Dawn Wood, who served as the instructor for those five days.
With three Atlantic crossings to her name, including one solo journey, Dawn Wood has an impressive track record. She is currently preparing to row across the Pacific.

“Dawn is so passionate that I didn’t even notice the time passing. Her experience and advice have allowed me to learn a great deal and have given me confidence in this preparation.”

The majority of the other participants are registered for the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge (TWAC), a legendary race that takes place from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean.

“All the people present share the same passion and have the same goal: to cross the ocean. I felt a wave of motivation during the discussions because they all said that the Human Impulse project was incredible, and they are excited to hear updates,” Louis expressed.

Louis had the opportunity to practice and obtain the Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC), which is mandatory for communication with other vessels.

A full day was dedicated to important medical concepts, such as hygiene, survival interventions, and medications.

“I had two days of essential navigation courses, which included learning about the instruments on board, as well as being able to navigate in case of electronic failure. It’s important because anything can happen, and I need to be prepared to find my way in case my equipment fails,” Louis explained.

The last day was dedicated to the use of life jackets and survival boats in the event of abandoning the boat.

“In reality, it would take a truly extreme situation for me to need to abandon my boat. But having practiced that possibility gives me confidence, so that I won’t panic if it ever happens.”

In summary, this week has been an enormous asset to Louis’ preparation. It has allowed him to gain valuable experience to maximize the chances of a successful ocean crossing.
