Rowing across the Atlantic

On November 6, 2023, Louis finally embarked on his journey to cross the Atlantic Ocean, after an initial attempt was aborted a month earlier. He had to turn back after more than ten days at sea due to an approaching storm.

With favorable weather once again, he set out on the water towards the Canary Islands. This crossing took him 19 days. Once in Las Palmas, he took the time to rest and stock up in preparation for the enormous journey that lay ahead to the Caribbean.

The Big Crossing

On December 13, 2023, Louis set off for the big crossing! Very quickly, challenging weather conditions tested the Swiss during the first half of the journey. He had to navigate southward and later head back up to avoid a depression that could have had serious consequences.

His mental resilience was also tested as he became increasingly aware of the magnitude of his adventure and the distance he still had to cover, often at a speed that did not exceed two and a half knots (4.6 km/h).

Then, the long-awaited day arrived. On February 28, 2024, 76 days after leaving the Canary Islands, Louis finally reached Martinique, where he was reunited with his loved ones who had come for the occasion.

The swiss’s departure for Colombia was delayed by a few days due to a Dengue fever infection, but he successfully reached Colombia on May 1st after less than 30 days at sea.

He thus became the first person to row across the Caribbean Sea to Colombia.
