On December 13, 2023, Louis Margot embarked once again on his boat to continue the second leg of his human powered journey around the world. He is now heading towards the Caribbean Islands, where he will enjoy a few weeks’ break.

Challenging conditions

Since his departure from Las Palmas (Canary Islands), Louis has primarily had to learn to navigate in challenging, if not very challenging conditions. Indeed, the ocean has been particularly rough, especially due to a low-pressure system that forced him, in early January, to head south, to correct his course a little later.

A mental challenge

This has been a period that was mentally challenging for Louis, who began to doubt and deeply ponder the meaning of his adventure: “I am starting to feel the weight of this adventure and what I want to achieve,” he explains on his Instagram account. “I am making progress at 2 and a half knots when I row, and I have 4800 km to reach the Caribbean from the Canaries, and after a while, you go crazy,” he explains.

Some good news

Since mid-January, the conditions have once again become favorable, despite a rather rough ocean, and the winds are once again on his side. This allows him to make good progress.

One evening, he even received a visit from a monohull, which approached him and offered him fresh fruits, a cooked meal, and… a cold beer, a real morale booster: “It’s too beautiful!” exclaimed the rower.

Finally halfway!

On January 24, he finally crossed the point marking the halfway point of his journey across the Atlantic Ocean, a milestone he had long awaited: “It’s like when you’re a kid and you’re going somewhere by car with your parents: halfway is a psychological milestone.”

Since passing the halfway point of his journey across the Atlantic, Louis has been making good progress, despite “a rough ocean,” and he is already envisioning the end, via the French islands of Martinique, where he is eager to rest.
